We are the members of English 14: Introduction to Literary History and Interpretation at Santa Clara University in Winter quarter 2017. For a unit on literary genre, we are conducting research for and engaging in collaborative design of a card game that aims to reflect and share our learning about the history and theory of various literary genres and subgenres.
The concept for the game is loosely based on Pokemon Go, in the sense that there are three teams (in our case, poetry, prose, and drama rather than valor, instinct, and mystic), that there are several types or categories of creatures within each of those categories (types of novels, poems, autobiographies, and dramas rather than water or grass or fairy pokemon), and a vast number of specific examples within those types (in our case, particular literary texts rather than pikachus or squirtles). Our game will take vintage form, using material cards rather than a digital program. We will work to develop rules and goals for the game as we move through our research.
The Poetry team will be researching the subgenres of lyric, pastoral, and epic.
The Prose/Novel team will be researching the subgenres of epistolary novel, frontier romance, gothic novel, and neo-slave novel.
The Prose/Autobiography team will be researching the subgenres of slave narrative, spiritual autobiography, graphic memoir, and testimonio.
The Drama team will be researching the subgenres of melodrama, masque, court drama, and farce.
Each team member will post two blog entries here about his/her research experience (in locating both secondary and primary sources) and one blog entry about the collaborative experience of designing the game.
Our hope is that players of the game we create will learn something about literature as they collect (or trade or battle or do whatever with) their cards. We welcome comments and feedback on any and all blog posts.
